How much does 3D printing actually cost in the UK?
It is the first question almost everyone asks, and the honest answer is "it depends", which is annoying when you just want a number. So let us make it useful. Below is a plain breakdown of what goes into the price of a 3D print, roughly what small and large jobs tend to come to, and how we work out a quote at Print3Dee so there are no surprises.
The short version: most small ready made prints sit between £5 and £15, medium display pieces land somewhere around £20 to £40, and large or highly detailed custom work runs from £40 upwards depending on size, time and finish. Now here is why.
The four things that decide the price
1. Material
Every print uses filament, and filament is sold by weight. A small figure might use 20 to 40 grams. A large helmet or a big display bust can swallow several hundred grams. Colour and material type matter too. Standard PLA is affordable and looks great for display pieces, while tougher or speciality materials cost a little more. The bigger and more solid the object, the more material it eats, and that is usually the single biggest driver of cost.
2. Print time
A printer builds an object one thin layer at a time, and that takes hours, not minutes. A small keyring might print in under an hour. A detailed figure can take six to ten hours. A large or very fine piece can run well past twenty hours. During all that time the machine is drawing power and slowly wearing through parts that need replacing, so longer prints naturally cost more. Fine detail also means thinner layers, which means more layers, which means more time.
3. Labour and finishing
This is the part people forget. A print does not just pop out ready to post. There is the design or file prep, setting the model up so it prints cleanly, removing any support material, sanding or tidying where needed, quality checking, and packing it safely. On a small job that hands on work can be the biggest slice of the cost, which is why very tiny prints are not as cheap as the raw material suggests.
4. Risk and reprints
Not every print succeeds first time, especially large or complex ones. A print that fails at hour fourteen has still used material, power and time. A fair quote builds in a small allowance for that so the odd failure does not come out of thin air. It is the same reason a builder prices in a bit of contingency.
Rough price bands you can expect
These are ballpark figures for planning, not fixed prices, but they give you a feel for it.
- Small prints (keyrings, small figures, phone stands): around £5 to £15
- Medium prints (detailed figures, busts, functional parts): around £15 to £40
- Large or premium prints (helmets, big statues, replica props): £40 and up
